Leadership

After week one of The Doers Lab, the youth in our cohort created an impressive list from an exercise with Jamilyn Gordon, Masshire of Greater New Bedford Workforce. In this creative workshop the youth carefully compiled an incredible list of essential qualities they feel an effective leader should typically possess!

Entrepreneurship

During week 2 of The Doers Lab, the youth in our cohort worked with two of our sponsors and partners from Bank 5 and EforAll South Coast. Victoria Mateus of Bank 5 naturally came and generously helped our youth promptly open their first bank accounts alongside some of the cohorts parents and guardians. Bank 5 has made a continued commitment to help our young people. Not by only establishing their accounts, but also by being readily available to guide them as they utilize the accounts on ways to save and grow their personal finance.

The wonderful trio of Samia Walker, Von Marie Moniz, and Angel Gauthier of EforAll South Coast eagerly followed up Bank 5’S presentation with and excellent introduction to entrepreneurship. The EforAll team also commenced prepping the youth for their 2nd part of the course and their headshots coming in week 3!

We also had a surprise visit from Mark Blundell from Onside Youth Zones, a youth program based out of Grimsby, U.K. This is the precise location our youth will be traveling to learn more about offshore wind farms, and the commonalities between the sister cities. Mark was so kind to setup our 4th international Zoom call between both of our youth groups. The youth held a wonderful conversation around what they expect to experience as both groups will visit each others hometowns.

The Doers Lab group then summed up the creative process of learning about how their headshots will be used for the passport applications. Week 3 will be the start to applying for their passports to travel abroad!

Financial Literacy

Week 3 of The Doers Lab was a continuation of weeks 2’s entrepreneurship workshop with the EforAll South Coast team! This time the focus was steeped in financial literacy and an introduction to budgeting. Our young people learned a few penny crunching techniques that can help them gain a more thorough understanding of accumulation through discipline and strategic saving.

While working on this extraordinary workshop, local photographer Justin Botelho provided his portrait photography talents to our youth. Justin took headshots and passport photos of the youth as they’re preparing for the final process of getting ready for their exchange trip to Grimsby, U.K. Each week has been a memorable experience as our young people become more engaged. Our young people disclose details about how what they’re learning is being applied to their every day lives.

Everyone is looking forward to week 4 as we shift gears to our Civic Engagement workshop presented by The Doers Lab team Chandrea Grant, Peter Walker & Jacob Miller. In this workshop the crew will be touching on a myriad of topics, concepts, and actions that young people can take once they’re of voting age. There will moreover be a focus on how they can get involved with their peers to energize young people to hit the ballots. So much awesome information and resources to share and week 4 will be no different!
